When noise reduction matters, STC and OITC impact-window ratings can make a proposal more useful than a vague claim such as “quieter.” The two metrics are related, but they are not interchangeable.
STC and OITC answer different questions
Sound Transmission Class, or STC, summarizes performance across a frequency range commonly used for interior building partitions and speech-related sound. Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class, or OITC, includes lower frequencies that can be important for traffic, aircraft, and other exterior sources.
FGIA’s updated acoustical performance report specifically distinguishes STC from OITC and their appropriate uses. Ask which metric is being quoted and why it fits the noise source at your property.
Confirm what was tested
A number for glass alone is not necessarily the rating of a complete operable window. Frame construction, glass make-up, seals, unit size, vents, joints, and installation perimeter can influence the result. Request a test report or manufacturer data for the complete product and a configuration close to the proposed unit.
Compare STC to STC or OITC to OITC. A higher number in one system should not be compared directly with a number from the other.
Diagnose the path, not only the opening
Noise can also enter through doors, walls, roofs, vents, gaps, and poorly sealed perimeters. A strong window rating cannot correct every flanking path. Record when the noise occurs, where it seems loudest, and whether it is low-frequency rumble, voices, music, or intermittent impact.

Add acoustic goals to the scope
Tell the estimator which rooms and sources matter most. Ask for the exact glass and frame configuration, documented STC and/or OITC, impact approval, size, operating type, and perimeter installation scope. Fixed and operable units can perform differently; see our fixed-window guide.
